Everything You Need to Know
About Vipassana Meditation

Considering a 10-day silent meditation retreat? This site is a companion guide to dhamma.org, with honest answers to your questions, preparation tips, and personal experience from a practitioner with 60 days of courses completed.

What is Vipassana?

The word “Vipassana” means seeing things as they actually are. It's an ancient meditation practice from India with roots going back over 2,500 years to the time of Gotama Buddha, who taught it as a practical path toward living with greater clarity and freedom from suffering.

Today the technique is offered through intensive 10-day silent residential retreats at over 200 centers worldwide. You learn through direct experience — observing your own breath and bodily sensations under a structured daily schedule with clear ethical guidelines.

Every course runs on a donation-only model: there are zero fees for tuition, food, or lodging. The entire operation is sustained by voluntary contributions from past participants who want to pay it forward.

For official information, course schedules, and registration, visit dhamma.org.

Why Trust This Guide?

This guide is written by a practitioner with 60 days of courses completed — six 10-day courses sat at three different centers across California, plus over 900 consecutive days of daily two-hour practice. The advice here comes from direct, sustained experience with the technique as taught by S.N. Goenka.

The goal is simple: give you the practical, honest information that the official site doesn't cover. What to actually expect during your first course. How to navigate the application process. What to pack. What the hard parts feel like and how to work through them. Think of it as an unofficial companion to dhamma.org, built from personal experience.

This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Vipassana Research Institute (VRI) or dhamma.org. For official course information and registration, always refer to dhamma.org.
